Retired IPS officer sets example, elected Gram Pradhan unopposed

Former IPS officer Vimla Gunjyal who retired from the post of inspector general was recently elected unopposed to the post of Gram Pradhan of her village Gunji. The residents of Gunji, located in Dharchula area of Pithoragarh district close to the border with both Nepal and China, unanimously decided to elect her as the Gram Pradhan.

Talking to the media, she said that she did not wish to fight fof the post and on the request of the villagers, she decided to submit her nomination for the post of the Gram Pradhan. She said that she was elected unopposed with the blessings of the village elders, her peers and the youths.

The villagers expect that considering her experience in various positions and areas along with her familiarity with the government system, Gunjyal becoming the Gram Pradhan will help enhance basic facilities in education, healthcare, roads and communication infrastructure in this Himalayan village.Gunji village lies on the route to Adi Kailash, Om Parvat and the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage.

In 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also visited the village. Due to its location in the border area, the personnel of the Indian Army and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) also maintain their presence in this area.
