Recycled material made benches now in Gandhi Park

Promoting the recycling of domestic garbage in the city, the Dehradun Mayor Sunil Uniyal ‘Gama’ inaugurated the new benches constructed from the recycled materials by a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Waste Warriors in Gandhi Park on Wednesday.

The benches are made from the cardboard prepared by recycling the waste like juice boxes and milk cartons thrown by locals in dumps.

Appreciating the initiative of the organisation, ‘Gama’ stated that preparing useful products from waste materials like the sturdy benches installed in Gandhi Park can resolve various garbage related issues in the city. It will also raise awareness among people about proper garbage disposal and compels them to look at the garbage in a different way, said the mayor. According to him, such initiatives will not only contribute to reducing waste disposal issue in the city but will also increase better employment opportunities for rag pickers. Further, the officials also informed that the corporation will possibly soon install such benches in the premises of the municipal corporation too. Moreover, the municipal commissioner, Vinay Shankar Pandey and chief municipal health officer, Dr Kailash Joshi were also present during the inauguration ceremony besides the mayor.
