Recover property tax arrears on government buildings: Goyal

Considering the fact that the property tax of several non-residential buildings in the city is pending for years, the Dehradun municipal commissioner Manuj Goyal has directed the tax section of Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) to take action to recover the dues within this financial year that ends on March 31. The MCD has collected property tax of nearly Rs 40 crore so far and is on track to recover Rs 50 crore which was its primarily set target.

However the municipal commissioner has directed the officials to work on recovering arrears of non-residential buildings too which amounts to about Rs 20- 30 crore. He has set duties of tax inspectors, tax superintendents and assistant municipal commissioner to recover revenue of about Rs 80 crore including current property tax and pending dues of non-residential buildings. The officials informed that each tax inspector will focus on recovering taxes dues ranging between Rs 50,000 to Rs one lakh, tax superintendents will work to recover taxes dues between Rs one lakh to Rs five lakh and assistant municipal commissioner will work to recover dues ranging between Rs five lakh and above. He has directed them to make all efforts to recover this amount by March 31.

The tax collected through non-residential buildings constitute the major portion of property tax and as per the municipal officials, there are over 250 non-residential establishments which are yet to pay tax to the corporation. Out of these, there are 47 such non-residential establishments in the city which are yet to deposit pending property tax of over Rs 9.7 crore.

These 47 buildings include 34 establishments running under the state government and five establishments operating under central government including Police Line in Race Course, Government Doon Medical College, LIC of India office in Sahastradhara Road, chief education officer building in Mayur Vihar, BRIDCUL office in Niranjanpur, Skill development and employment office in Convent Road among others. The tax superintendent Dharmesh Painuly said that the MCD has been sending notices and bills to parties concerned and many establishments have deposited hefty amounts. He said that all officials are working on tax recovering and would do their best to achieve the set target by the commissioner.
