Ramnagar’s demography altered on Rs 10 stamp paper

CHANCHAL GOLA/Ramnagar

The recent demolition of 51 encroachments on reserved forest land in Puchhdi area of Ramnagar has revealed the extent of demographic change and the means being used by the encroachers to occupy government land and also enjoy various government facilities.

The State government has finally stepped up vigilance considering the rapidly changing demographic pattern in various parts of the State. Years of unchecked encroachments and the rising influx of outsiders have now placed the administration on high alert. The most recent example is the village of Puchhdi in Ramnagar, where large areas of land were illegally colonized through transactions made on mere Rs10 stamp papers.

The region, which falls under the Terai West forest division, was once known for its dense forest cover. However, in the past few years, people from various districts of Uttar Pradesh began settling here by initially setting up temporary huts. Proximity to the Kosi river enabled many to earn through sand mining and gradually convert their makeshift shelters into permanent houses.

Not only this, the encroachers also occupied vacant forest land and even began farming illegally. Through small monetary transactions and basic stamp papers, thousands of square feet of land came under unauthorised occupation, eventually turning into a permanent settlement.

Surprisingly, these encroachers managed to obtain Aadhaar cards, electricity connections, water supply, ration cards and various other government facilities. Over time, they brought in more relatives, expanding the illegal settlement into a sizable colony.

When the government conducted a detailed assessment of the changing demographic trends, it became clear that such patterns could pose a threat to Uttarakhand’s social, cultural and geographic balance. Consequently, the State has initiated stringent measures to curb this rising trend.

The recent action in Puchhdi village is an example of this new strict approach, where dozens of illegal structures were demolished and appropriate action taken against the encroachers. According to official sources, considering the State’s sensitive geographic conditions and limited resources, controlling unregulated demographic shifts has become essential. Preparations are underway for statewide action against encroachments, forged documents and unauthorised settlements.
