Post-mortem report awaited in custodial death of inmate
In the case of an inmate’s alleged suicide in police custody at Sahaspur police station there has been no written complaint filed by the family of the deceased yet. District police is also waiting for the post-mortem report. Meanwhile, Superintendent of Police (rural) Parmendra Dobhal informed that the body was cremated on Sunday. The inter-department inquiry of the case will be conducted by SP City Shweta Choubey.
The deceased inmate has been identified as 24-year old Abhinav Yadav native of Uttar Pradesh. According to the police, the inmate was found hanging in the cell at Sahaspur police station. He used part of the blanket to make a noose and then tied it around his neck and then hanged himself from the nails.
As per the local police, the deceased was accused of attempting to rape and then blackmailing a minor. A complaint was lodged by complainant’s father at Sahaspur police station. The accused got in contact with the complainant’s his daughter in a wedding reception and identified himself as deputy commissioner in Indian Airlines.
Soon after the incident came into light, Inspector General (IG) Garhwal Ajay Rautela and Dehradun Superintendent of Police (SSP) Arun Mohan Joshi reached at the station. They assessed the situation after which the Station Officer (SO) PD Bhatt along with a lady Inspector has been reverted to the Lines while two deputy Inspectors have been suspended.
It is pertinent to mention here that earlier in the year 2012, another inmate was found dead at Dhara Chowki where Bhatt was then stationed as the Chowki in-charge. The case is still undergoing investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) after the inmate’s family filed a case against the police.
It is also important to mention here that in the case of deceased Abhinav the CCTV footage of the police station will be playing a major role. As per the sources, the footage is being thoroughly checked by the senior officials of police department themselves.
