A team from the Uttar Pradesh Anti Terrorist Squad (UP ATS) is reported to have reached Uttarakhand to investigate a suspected network linked to Delhi blast terror-accused Dr Shaheen Shahid. The team is checking if Shahid’s network has spread into Uttarakhand. However, the State’s inspector general of police (Crime and Law and Order) Nilesh Anand Bharne refused to comment on the subject.
Meanwhile, the police also launched a checking drive on Saturday at shops that rent or sell old cars and bikes. All registers and documents related to vehicle rental or sale were checked carefully.
Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh said that this verification is the full responsibility of the shop owner. Officials were also told to prepare standard operating procedure for these establishments. Shop owners were instructed to verify the buyer’s documents and mobile numbers before selling or renting any vehicle.
Under the SOP, shop owners must collect complete details of the buyer, confirm ID proofs and verify all phone numbers. They must also ensure that most payments for vehicle purchase are made through the buyer’s bank account.
According to sources, some of Shahid’s close contacts have been traced in Uttarakhand. After getting this information, Dehradun police went on high alert and started monitoring sensitive locations. The SSP warned that strict action will be taken against anyone who fails to follow the rules. He said that the police will continue special checking in all police station areas to maintain safety and prevent misuse of vehicles.
