Police seize liquor to be used in Panchayat polls

The Jhabreda police in Haridwar seized 240 crates of liquor from a truck on Sunday morning. The value of the seized liquor is said to be about Rs 14 lakh. The accused truck driver caught by the police said during questioning that the liquor was supposedly meant to be used during the Panchayat elections.

Manglaur police circle officer Pankaj Gairola said that in view of the upcoming Panchayat elections in the district, a checking campaign has been started by the Jhabreda police. Acting on a tip off, the police stopped a truck coming from the direction of Saharanpur on Manakpur bypass road. A total of 240 crates of liquor with Chandigarh marking were seized from the truck. During questioning, the truck driver Manoj and operator Ankit said that the liquor had been sourced from Chandigarh by other persons. The accused said that that they keep fake goods bills to show during checking.

When the police stopped the truck, it was filled with plastic scrap which was used to conceal the liquor consignment. The truck was to reach Haridwar and the driver was told to meet a person named Pravesh, said the police.
