Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ensuing visit to Dehradun, joint teams of the police and local intelligence unit (LIU) verified 650 outside residents, tenants and suspected individuals across multiple locations in the district on Wednesday. The Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh said that the police are on high alert due to VVIP movements in the district and carrying out intensive checking and verification drives. Since the PM is expected to reach Dehradun on November 9 to attend the Uttarakhand State Foundation Day programme at Forest Research Institute (FRI), the police conducted the drive in areas under FRI, Indian Military Academy (IMA), Jolly Grant and the Premnagar police station limits, including THDC Colony, Phulsaini and Jamunwala. Police officials checked documents and identities of individuals residing temporarily or on rent to ensure compliance with legal norms. Singh informed that during the verification, police found out that 13 house owners had failed to verify their tenants. The police issued challans against them under Section 83 of the Police Act and collected a fine of Rs1.3 lakh. Beside this, police also took action under Section 81 of the Police Act against eight suspects and recovered Rs 2,000 in fines. The SSP said that he has directed all police station in-charges to conduct tenant verification to identify suspicious persons ahead of the VVIP programme. Verification drives will continue across key areas to maintain law and order in coming days too, he said. The Dehradun district magistrate Savin Bansal also reached FRI at 5:30 AM on Wednesday for a surprise inspection and to review the preparations for the PM’s programme. He said that the preparations are going well and everything is being done as per plan.
