Fill ditches dug for works in 24 hours or pay expenses and penalty, warns mayor

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) will impose hefty fines on departments concerned if they fail to fill pits dug across the city as part of construction works under various projects within 24 hours. Such unfinished construction sites filled with rainwater are providing breeding grounds for mosquitoes which neutralises MCD’s efforts under the anti-dengue campaign, claimed the Dehradun mayor Sunil Uniyal ‘Gama’. He said that the corporation has been consistently working for dengue prevention since May with steps like fogging and spraying of larvicide in vulnerable areas of the city. However, it was observed that various construction works being carried out by different departments in various areas have remained unfinished for months. The officials concerned did not finish the work on time and ditches on several roads can be observed across the city which were not filled even before the commencement of monsoon. The officials showed negligence in filling such ditches and dug up spaces which are now the potential breeding ground for mosquitoes causing malaria, said the mayor. He said that this negligence has caused suffering to numerous families across the city as dengue cases continue to rise in Doon. Considering all these issues, ‘Gama’ called a meeting on Monday which was joined by officials of various departments concerned. He warned the officials to fill all such pits in the next 24 hours or the corporation will take necessary action against them. He said that if the officials concerned fail to do so, MCD teams will fill all the pits and recover the amount spent on the work from the departments concerned. Besides this, MCD will also impose a hefty challan which would be double the usual amount. The mayor added that it will be ensured that the government takes action against the departments concerned for their inconsiderate attitude regarding the unfinished and delayed construction projects.
