Pithoragarh By election Moderate voter turnout of 47.48 percent reported. Chandra Pant of BJP, Anju Lunthi of Congress and Manoj Kumar Bhatt of SP are in frayed.
The voting for the assembly by election of Pithoragarh ended peacefully on Monday. With culmination of voting, the fate of all three candidates in the fray was sealed inside the Electronic Voting Machines (EVM). The voters however exhibited lukewarm response with only 47.48 percent of voters coming out to exercise their franchise. The voting in 145 polling booths started at 8 am on the day.
The BJP candidate Chandra Pant cast vote at the Government Girls Inter College (GGIC), Pithoragarh. At this booth, the father and mother of Late Prakash Pant also exercised their franchise. The voting started on a slow note on the day with only 4.36 percent voters coming out to vote in the first hour of the voting. In the assembly elections held in 2017, 64.59 percent voter turnout was recorded.
At the polling station of Devdwar the villagers observed a boycott of the polling. Here only two votes were cast out of 461 registered voters. The villagers boycotted the election in support of their demand of construction of a road.
For free and fair elections and the election commission had deployed 15 sector magistrates, two zonal magistrates, two zonal officers and 15 sector officers. A company of Indo -Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), two companies of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), two platoons of Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) were also pressed into service to help local police.
In the by election an electorate of 105708 voters were registered to exercise their franchise out of them 52871 were male voters while 52837 were female voters. The election commission had set up 145 polling stations out of which 43 were located in urban areas while 102 were in rural areas.
