The State Health department of Uttarakhand has said that the deaths of 48 pilgrims have so far occurred during the ongoing Char Dham Yatra. As per the department, the 46 pilgrims died due to sudden cardiac arrest while two have succumbed to injuries sustained from falling over from the mountainside.  The director general (DG) of state health services Dr Shailja Bhatt said that most of the pilgrims who have died were suffering from pre existing diseases  and some of them were having long Covid. She said that the state health department is undertaking regular screening of pilgrims in which it has been seen that the pilgrims are facing problems due to hypothermia in the upper Himalayan regions and health issues due to less availability of oxygen. Meanwhile the secretary health Radhika Jha has directed that the districts should reduce the response time so that the patients receive fast treatment. She appreciated the department’s feat of health screening of 42,658 pilgrims on Gangotri and Yamunotri Yatra route.
