Uttarakhand Police Headquarters (PHQ) is going to resume Operation Smile to unite lost children with their families. Director General (Law and Order) Ashok Kumar said that the campaign will start from December 1 and will be concluded after two months. He said that they are hoping for optimistic results this year as well. In addition to that Operation Shinakht will also be conducted in the state during the same time period for the verification of unidentified bodies.
DG Kumar also said that taking cognisance of the recent activities of child beggars on the streets, the Vikasnagar unit of Anti Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) has been shifted to the Dehradun city. It has been done to make sure that the children identified earlier during the campaign, continue to undergo their studies. If any parent is found forcing the children in this line of work, legal actions will be taken against them.
It is pertinent to mention here that the initiative of Police Headquarters (PHQ) against child begging was in the first phase conducted in Dehradun and for the second phase it was conducted in Haridwar. The police though tried on their level, but the lack of cooperation from departments and commissions concerned led to the partial failure of the campaign.
