Wednesday, 15 March 2023 | PNS | DEHRADUN

The Phool Dei folk festival of Uttarakhand has started with traditional joy, welcoming the spring. It is celebrated on the first day of the month of Chaitra. It is generally celebrated throughout a month.  The young girls play the most important role in this celebration.  This festival is associated with nature and the advent of spring. This time of the year sees flowers of myriad kinds bloom in multiple colours.  This festival is celebrated mainly in the rural areas of Uttarakhand.

During this festival, the young girls visit houses in the neighbourhood and the villages carrying plates filled with flowers, leaves, jaggery, rice and coconut. They pray for the well-being of the families they visit and the elders of these families bless them with gifts.

This festival not just helps the young to get closely connected to nature but it helps pass on the heritage of the state from generation to generation.
