Pet owners should take more care of pets in summer: experts

While stating that dehydration and skin infections become common enough among dogs during the summer season, the experts advised pet owners to take extra precautions to protect their dogs as long as the summer lasts. The experts’ guidance applies not just to the pet dogs but the strays as well.
A representative of the Animal Welfare Board of India and a member of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), Rubina Nitin Iyer said that during the summer months, heat-related ailments become common among both pet and stray dogs. She pointed out that certain breeds, such as Siberian Huskies and the Bhutia, suffer more during this season. “These breeds are adapted to extremely cold environments, making it uncomfortable for them to cope with the heat when they live in the warmer plains. The people should refrain from bringing these breeds from the cooler regions into the hotter ones. For, they suffer a great deal amidst the sizzling summer heat,” she said.
Dogs of other breeds also experience skin infections and heat strokes, she said and added that sudden changes in their behaviour such as frequent and continuing barking might occur due to their frustration and discomfort. “Pet parents must ensure that their dogs have constant access to water during the summer. Besides, they must try to keep their pets away from the heat. In case they live in areas which suffer power outages, they must arrange an inverter for the comfort of their pets. More importantly, they should seek veterinary assistance promptly if any health issues arise,” she said.
Iyer also stressed that the stray dogs also need special care during summer. She suggested that the government should take initiatives to provide water bowls for stray dogs and encourage citizens to contribute to the cause by placing water in bowls for them.
Further, the veterinarian Gaurav Tiwari said that he has recently observed cases of heat stroke and dehydration among dogs with the mercury on the rise. “Besides, the fleas become more active during this season, leading to skin irritation and other problems for dogs. Common summer ailments include skin diseases, urinary infections and dehydration, which can result in increased stress and make the canines more susceptible to other ailments,” he added.
“I would advise the pet parents to ensure that their dogs have 24-hour access to food and water. For breeds such as Huskies and Bhutias, which are better suited for cooler climates, I recommend they be given ice baths once a week,” he said, adding that the people should take care of the strays too during these months by providing water and other assistance they badly need.
