Over 580 student volunteers have connected with the plastic-free Dehradun campaign of the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) in 10 days. The Dehradun mayor Sunil Uniyal ‘Gama’ said that the campaign was launched on March 26 with a set target to reach about 25,000 students and their families from 100 schools in the city till April 30 and 88 schools have already given their nod to join the campaign. He said that the MCD teams have visited 70 schools, many of which have already started collecting single-use plastics. He said that MCD has opened a plastic bank in each participating school under the campaign for students to deposit the plastic waste in it after the collection.

Calling the progress of the campaign satisfactory so far, he said that the remaining journey of this campaign will bring incredible results for the city by raising awareness among locals about segregation of garbage, adopting composting at the domestic level and the basic etiquettes one must follow to keep their city clean. It is pertinent to mention here that MCD has started this campaign under Swachh Survekshan 2022 (SS22) to increase citizens’ engagement with the survey as well as to raise awareness among them about sanitation and SS22.
