The driver and the conductor of a school bus were rescued after the bus overturned and fell on its side when the driver was attempting to negotiate a nullah flowing across the road. The last minute decision of the school management to not pick up students in the bus due to heavy rains may have averted a more serious accident.

Various rivers and nullahs were swollen on Tuesday due to heavy rains in parts of Kumaon since Monday night. At 6:25 AM on Tuesday, a bus of MDM School had gone to Thwalkheda area to pick up students. The water level in the Kiroda nullah rose in the meantime. The school manager Dharmendra Chandra received information about this and directed the driver to turn back. The driver was returning without the students and trying to cross the Kiroda nullah when the strong current pushed the bus onto its side with the driver Kamlesh Karki and conductor Yogesh Pant in it. The duo was able to get out of the bus after which they were rescued by the police and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel with the help of local residents. The duo was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries. The police ordered closure of the road till the water level subsides.
