A 30-year-old woman from Rishikesh has fallen victim to an online fraud on the pretext of a job in the Indian Army. The victim, Shalini Mamgain, a resident of Amit Gram, Gumaniwala, alleged that she had been swindled of Rs 2.6 lakh through Facebook and WhatsApp.

According to the complaint, Shalini received a friend request on Facebook from a woman called Aditi Rajput in May 2023. The accused allegedly offered her a job in the Army, posing herself as an officer. Later, Shalini was allegedly connected to a man who introduced himself as Colonel Rohit Verma. He is alleged to have assured her that she would get a joining letter after paying money for the process. Moreover, the accused asked Shalini to deposit money into a bank account in the name of one Reena Rana. The complainant said that trusting them, she had transferred a total amount of Rs 2.6 lakh in multiple transactions done between June and July 2023. However, she had never received any joining letter, she alleged.  When she had tried to contact the accused, they stopped responding to her calls, she added.

Realising that she had been cheated, Shalini approached the Cyber Crime Police Station in Dehradun and filed a complaint.
