One woman killed, three injured in chance encounter with elephant

One woman was trampled to death and three others were injured by an elephant in the woods near Sukhro bridge in Kotdwar on Tuesday morning. Some women from Dhruvpur in Kotdwar had gone to the forest to collect fodder for animals when they had the chance encounter with the elephant.

The Lansdowne divisional forest officer Dinkar Tiwari told this correspondent that the incident occurred at about 10 AM when the women had entered the woods in the Gwalgad beat to collect fodder. The elephant fatally trampled Sunita Chaudhary killing her on the spot and injured three women- Sunita, Suman and a third woman whose name had not been confirmed till the time of filing this report. The DFO said that he visited the site of the incident in the forest which is in the proximity of the new Sukhro bridge.

The women from nearby settlement used to go to this area to collect fodder. Tiwari said that he surmised that the elephant must have been coming down the bridle path to the Sukhro stream to drink water when the women must have come in the way due to which the elephant could have reacted violently.  The DFO further informed that a compensation of Rs four lakh will be provided to the family of the woman killed in the encounter with the elephant
