Police arrest Haldwani riot main accused Abdul Malik

The police have arrested the main accused in the Haldwani riots, Abdul Malik and three other accused men. According to the police, Malik was arrested from Delhi. The police have so far arrested 82 accused in this case.

Following the violence in Haldwani on February 8 which resulted in at least seven deaths and injuries to more than a 100 persons along with damage to property due to arson, the Nainital senior superintendent of police Prahlad Narayan Meena had formed six teams to search for and arrest the main accused Malik and his son Abdul Moed. These police teams were searching for the prime accused and his son in different parts of the country including Gujarat, Delhi, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, among other locations. One of the police teams succeeded in arresting Malik from Delhi. The district police have also arrested two other accused men Mohammed Furkan and Salim. Earlier, another accused Raees was arrested by the police on Friday and presented in the court.

Following the arrest of the main accused, the officiating director general of police Abhinav Kumar has announced a cash reward of Rs 50,000, the Kumaon deputy inspector general of police has announced a reward of Rs 5,000 and the Nainital SSP has announced a reward of Rs 2,500 for the police team. Malik had leased the land on which the illegal Madarsa and namaz site were constructed. He is accused of having played a role in instigating the violence during the demolition of the illegal structures.

It will be recalled that violence had broken out in the Vanbhulpura area of Haldwani during the demolition of an illegally constructed Madarsa and a namaz site. The resulting violence led to the death of seven persons, caused injuries to hundreds of personnel of the police, administration and the municipal corporation along with media persons. A number of buildings and vehicles were also damaged by the rioters committing arson during the riot. The police registered three FIRs and formed various teams to nab the guilty. The police checked footage from CCTV cameras and used other evidence to nab the accused. A number of illegal firearms have also been seized from the accused in the area.
