NIVH CASE: HC ORDERS SUSPENSION OF TEACHER, ASKS SECY TO CONDUCT PROBE

Thursday, 30 August 2018 | PNS | Nainital — Taking cognisance of alleged sexual harassment of students of the National Institute for the Visually Handicapped (NIVH) by a teacher, the High Court of Uttarakhand has ordered the suspension of the accused teacher and lodging of an FIR against him. The High Court also appointed Secretary Senthil Pandiyan to probe into the allegations and directed him to submit a report in three days. Taking cognisnace of various reported anomalies in the institute, the division bench of acting chief justice Rajiv Sharma and justice Manoj Kumar Tiwari ordered that an MBBS doctor should be appointed in the institute within 12 hours to ensure that the students get better health care. The power corporation was directed to ensure proper electricity supply and installation of a generator on campus to prevent problems like improper lighting. The Dehradun senior superintendent of police was directed to deputy a lady sub inspector and two constables to regularly check the scene at the institute. The culture secretary was directed to deputy two women to teach cultural activities and facilitate participation of the students in cultural activities. Further, the division bench also directed the government to approve a play ground within one month for the students. It will be recalled here that the students of the NIVH in Dehradun had undertaken a protest against alleged sexual harassment by a teacher and various other anomalies in the institute. The students had also complained about lack of proper facility and other problematic aspects in the management of the institute.
