The National Institute for the Empowerment of the Persons with Visual Disabilities (NIEPVD) has taken steps to make its students more independent by introducing computer-based exams instead of providing some assistance. This initiative is scheduled to be fully implemented in the upcoming board examinations for the academic year 2025-2026. Informing about this, the NIEPVD principal Amit Sharma said that for many years, visually disabled students affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) have relied on writers during board exams. However, the institute has been exploring ways to empower such children and prepare them for future endeavours. With this in mind, it has been decided that in the academic year 2025-2026, disabled students will be able to take computer-based board exams independently, he said.
Preparations are underway to ensure that class IX and XI students are adequately equipped for computer-based exams. Currently, there are a total of 45 students enrolled in these classes who are getting ready for the upcoming board examinations. A dedicated computer lab has been set up with 45 computers installed with special software for these exams. The software will present the exam questions audibly through headphones, allowing students to type their answers. Basic typing skills are being taught to students from primary classes to facilitate this process, he added.
Sharma said that in light of this initiative, a request has been made to chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami for laptops for the students. Further, the executive council will also be approached to provide additional laptops for this purpose. They will also register the new medium at the CBSE site for the board examination. He stressed that the main aim of this initiative is to make students independent and efficient in the IT sector.
