New Year: Some to venture out, some to celebrate quietly at home

As Dehradun counts down to midnight, the city is alive with New Year excitement. Streets and popular venues are set for live music shows, parties and bonfire events, promising a festive night for both residents and tourists.

Shweta Mishra, a resident, said, “My friends and I are looking forward to celebrating around a bonfire. The weather being chilly makes it completely suitable for a barbecue and some Karaoke with friends and family.”

However, not all Doonites are venturing out. Many are opting for quiet celebrations at home, avoiding the traffic and crowds that swell with tourists every year. Shivani Gupta of Rajpur Road said, “Traffic starts building up from morning itself. Every year, countless tourists visit the city and it becomes extremely congested. That’s why we prefer celebrating at home with our family, preparing carrot pudding, peanuts and lighting a small bonfire to welcome the New Year.”

Rita Devi shared similar concerns. “People come from Delhi and Chandigarh to celebrate in Mussoorie and that area gets overcrowded, causing traffic jams. Here in Rajpur, we have cozy cafes, so we celebrate locally with our family. It is peaceful and we get to enjoy the day without being stuck in traffic,” she said.

This New Year, Dehradun reflects the diversity of its celebrations. While some enjoy bustling public events on Rajpur Road and music-filled nights, others cherish intimate family moments at home. Whether amid a lively bonfire or in the warmth of home, the festive spirit of togetherness marks the start of 2026 across the city.
