NCST member visits FRI, visits various exhibits

The Forest Research Institute (FRI) hosted a member of the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) Nirupam Chakma on Wednesday. The visit was aimed at reviewing the implementation of safeguards for Scheduled Tribes (STs) in the institute. Following the meeting, Chakma accompanied by the FRI director Renu Singh and other senior officials toured various museums on the campus.
The delegation visited the herbarium and xylarium, where the plant diversity of India is on show through a collection of trees and plants from India and across the world which comprises of 3,50,000 specimens. The commission member was interested to know about the ‘Sanjivani Booti’, and a specimen from Bundelkhand region was demonstrated. During the visit to the xylarium, 20,000 samples of wood from India and 45 other countries were showcased to the visitors. Information about the important commercial timbers along with most expensive timber species of India was shared with the commission, which includes red sanders, sandalwood, teak, sal, sheesham etc. Chakma thanked the FRI director and staff on behalf of the NCST for the experience.
