Monsoon near: adventure journeys to glaciers halted

PIONEER NEWS SERVICE/ Bageshwar
With monsoon season drawing near, the Bageshwar district administration has halted glacier treks. It means that the adventure lovers will have to wait till September when the monsoon rain will wane. The ongoing research work on the endangered snow leopards will also be affected during this period. The members of the research teams are coming back with their cameras. In April, the Forest department had started a campaign to find out the number of snow leopards still living in these glaciers, said the DFO, Dhruv Singh Martolia.
Notably, Pindari, Sunderdhunga and Kafni glaciers spread across this district are opened for adventure lovers from 15 April. Till June 15, domestic and foreign tourists come here for trekking. Most of the trekkers opt for Pindari glacier. The seasoned mountain adventurers, however, choose Sundardunga and Kafni. The glacier trekkers are registered at the Forest department’s Hichouri and Jakuni outposts and after registration, they are allowed to embark on their trekking trips. With the onset of rain, the Forest department has stopped doing registration. Now, the personnel posted at these posts are doing the duty of stopping people from going there sans registration.
