Wednesday, 22 August 2018 | PNS | Dehradun — Scientists and experts from various prominent institutions and government departments deliberated on various asepects in a kickoff meeting of the Council of Science and Industrial Research (CSIR) Mission Mode Project on “Safety and Security of Vital Installations” held at the Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP) on Tuesday. This mission mode project of CSIR deals with the assessment of earthquake safety, security of border installations and safety of structures from manmade disasters. CSIR-National Geophysical Research Institute (CSIR-NGRI) is the nodal laboratory and Central Building Research Institute (CBRI), Roorkee;Structural Engineering Research Center (SERC), Chennai; Central Scientific Instruments Organisation (CSIO), Chandigarh; Central Electronics Engineering Research Institute (CEERI), Pilani are the participating institutes. Speaking on the occasion, NGRI director VM Tiwari informed the participants about the importance of the project and its relevance to Uttarakhand region where natural and man-made disasters are severe. He mentioned that the important objectives of the project include earthquake hazard quantification in Uttarakhand and design and development of efficient slope stabilisation measures for mitigation of landslides in mountainous regions of theHimalayn belt. The CSIR mission directorate head Sudeep Kumar spoke about the importance of such initiative for providing science and technology solutions for the safety and security of buildings, hospitals, bridges and defense installations. CSIO director RK Sinha, SERC director Santosh Kapuria, CBRI director N Gopalakrishnan highlighted their respective work components of the project. Disaser Mitigation and Management Centre (DMMC) executive director Piyoosh Rautela represented the Uttarakhand State Government along with officials from stake holder departments. While speaking on the occasion Rautela spoke of the efforts of Uttarakhand government in disaster management and mitigation programmes. He said that Earthquake Hazard Assessment is an important activity for the state and complimented CSIR for taking such an important initiative for the state of Uttarakhand. The NGRI director VM Tiwari handed over a Fast Track Translation (FTT) project report aimed at the development of risk index maps for Dehradun city to Rautela on the occasion.
