MCD to start imposing penalties on plastic ban violations from April

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) will start imposing penalties on local residents and vendors violating the ban on single-use plastics from the first week of April. The Dehradun municipal commissioner, Vinay Shankar Pandey stated that he had constituted five teams to raise awareness in the five zones of the city in February after the MCD received orders from the State Government to reinstate the plastic ban. The teams have been raising awareness against the use of single-use plastics for about a month now which must have provided enough time to local consumers, vendors, retailers and shopkeepers to stop the practice of using banned plastic products, stated Pandey.

According to him, the teams would also execute raids on commercial establishments and plastic manufacturers besides imposing penalties on the locals found using single-use plastics from the first week of the next month. The officials also informed that the corporation can impose fine ranging from Rs 100 to Rs five lakh as per the violation by a consumer or a commercial body. Besides single-use plastics, the officials informed that various products made from polystyrene like disposable cups, plates and glasses and single-use polypropylene carry bags are also banned by the State Government and the corporation would impose penalties on their usage too.
