The garbage collected by the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) from the polling booths across the city will be disposed of on Thursday after being kept separately for 48 hours in garbage transfer stations.

After polling for the assembly elections ended on Monday evening, the corporation collected the garbage from all polling booths across the city on Tuesday. Unlike the earlier polls, the garbage mostly consisted of gloves, used masks and some PPE kits which were used as a precautionary measure against Covid-19 disease in the polling booths by polling booth staff as well as by the voters. The senior municipal health officer Dr RK Singh informed that the sanitation team had made plans for the proper collection and disposal of the garbage generated in the polling booths across the city ahead of the elections. He said that the sanitation workers started collecting the garbage from booths since Tuesday morning and the usual garbage and the trash like gloves, masks and PPE kits were collected and kept separately by the sanitation workers. He said, “The sanitation team did not just collect the garbage but even cleaned and sanitised the polling booths as per the protocols. All garbage was stored at the garbage transfer stations where the masks, gloves and PPE kits were stored separately too. Such garbage was packed separately in separate bags which were sanitised to avoid any Covid contagion during their transfer. Those are being kept there for 48 hours before finally transferring them to the solid and waste management and recycling plant in Sheeshambada on Thursday.” He also informed that the 35 tractors along with other vehicles were used to collect the garbage from all polling booths. He also said that the quantity of the garbage collected from the booths seems comparatively more than the last elections but the MCD can determine the correct quantity once the garbage will be transferred to the waste management plant.
