MCD plans to set up biogas plant, intends to minimise open disposal of cow dung

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) is planning to establish a biogas plant in association with the Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) which will also process the cow dung from all the dairies in the city. The dumping of cow dung in drains, various stretches of Rispana and Bindal rivers and in several other open public areas is one of the big sanitation issues in the city.

Many councillors have complained to the senior officials of the corporation several times that despite multiple warnings and penalties, the dairy owners continue to dispose of cow dung in public places that causes various issues to locals living nearby. In view of the same, the corporation has started considering a plan to establish a biogas plant in the city. Initially, the officials were planning to set up a biogas plant in the premises of one of the MCD’s cow shelters to process the cow dung of the cows living in its cow shelters but as per the municipal commissioner Abhishek Ruhela, no place has been finalised yet. “We are planning to establish a biogas plant to process the cow dung generated in the city. We are already in talks with the officials of GAIL to know more about the process. The biogas is a clean fuel and its generation with the help of cow dung from dairies across the city will also help the disposal issue of dung,” stated the commissioner. He also informed that the corporation is also working on how the cow dung will be collected from the dairy owners across the city for its proper disposal. “The corporation makes manure from the cow dung in its shelters and it can be done with the collected cow dung too. Some people will also get employment through this project. We have several ideas for this project but setting up a biogas plant will take at least four to six months,” added Ruhela.
