The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) imposed a penalty of Rs 10,000 on the owner of Anchal Dairy and Sweet Shop located near Swami Dayanand Setu (Rispana bridge) for alleged discharge of polluted water into the river.
The Dehradun chief municipal health officer Dr Avinash Khanna said that a surprise inspection was conducted on Friday at the shop. The team discovered during the inspection that polluted water was being discharged directly into the river, contributing to rising contamination levels. The owner Balveer Singh was fined Rs 10,000 on the spot and the amount was collected immediately.
Khanna said that in a separate inspection at the Dalanwala vegetable market, enforcement teams found widespread use of banned plastic carry bags. A total of 35 vendors were issued fines amounting to Rs 7,100 for violating the ban on polythene. The corporation has warned shopkeepers and dairy operators of stricter action if they repeat their offences, Khanna said.
