PIONEER NEWS SERVICE | Dehradun

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) imposed a penalty of Rs 50,000 on the management  of the Big Basket for several sanitation-related violations at its Balliwala Chowk location.

The chief municipal health officer Dr Avinash Khanna said that following complaints from local residents, a joint inspection was carried out on Friday by officials from the Uttarakhand Environment Protection and Pollution Control Board (UEPPCB) and MCD officials. During the inspection, the team reportedly found that the company was not disposing of waste according to prescribed standards.

The premises, both inside and outside, were littered with garbage, including scattered cups and plates, as per Khanna. He stated that the officials also found that the exhaust system installed inside the premises was causing noise pollution. He also informed that measurements using sound metres showed that the noise level exceeded 65 decibels, which is above the permissible limit for commercial establishments. Based on these findings, the authorities imposed a fine on Big Basket and instructed the management to comply with sanitation and environmental norms, Khanna said.
