CUG number to be assigned to each vehicle from June

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) has significantly improved its door-to-door garbage collection service, increasing coverage from about 55 per cent in February to 81 per cent this month, the municipal commissioner Namami Bansal said. During a Press conference on Wednesday, she stated that the MCD now directly manages garbage collection in 67 wards and a fleet of 140 to 150 vehicles currently serves 100 wards. Each vehicle is staffed by two drivers and two helpers and 78 supervisors oversee sanitation across these areas. Bansal said that to enhance coordination, the MCD will assign a Closed User Group (CUG) number to every garbage collection vehicle starting June 1. This initiative will help residents communicate directly with drivers to confirm collection timings. “During a field inspection on Wednesday, many locals shared that they often miss garbage pickup due to the absence of fixed vehicle timings. By assigning a CUG number to each vehicle, we aim to solve this issue,” the commissioner said. She also acknowledged that in areas with ongoing construction, collection vehicles face difficulty accessing inner lanes. In such cases, the MCD has urged residents to bring their garbage to the main road where vehicles can reach. Bansal stated that the corporation has made a great progress from 55 per cent to 81 per cent door to door collection in just a few months and is working efficiently to achieve 100 per cent coverage soon.
