MCD action exposes unsafe non-veg supply, raises public health concerns

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun
The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) on Monday exposed serious lapses in the meat supply chain in the city after inspecting a vehicle transporting chickens from outside the State in unhealthy conditions. Municipal officials said that during inspection, a large number of chickens were found dead inside the vehicle while several others were in a critical condition.
Preliminary assessment suggested the possibility of the birds being diseased. According to the officials, Dehradun has over 400 licensed shops selling animal products including chicken, mutton, fish and other meat products.
However, the absence of an authorised slaughterhouse in the district has many questioning where the poultry and animals are being slaughtered and what steps are being taken to ascertain the quality of the supply from neighbouring Uttar Pradesh.
