MCD to act against restaurants & hotels for failure to submit waste disposal action plan

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) will now start imposing penalties on restaurants and hotels which fail to dispose of their waste as per the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016. In the past one week, the corporation has imposed penalties of Rs 10,000 each on more than 60 apartment residential buildings across the city for their failure to submit an action plan for disposing of garbage generated by them in the MCD. Nearly 60 per cent of garbage collected by the corporation is generated by bulk waste generators (BWGs) that mainly include residential societies, apartment buildings and other commercial establishments that generate waste in bulk on a daily basis but fail to adopt a plan to dispose of this garbage.

The municipal commissioner Manuj Goyal issued an order last month to all BWGs to submit their plan within a month to tackle their daily waste to ensure SWM rules are being followed by all establishments. However, the corporation received negligible submissions following which, the health section has started imposing penalties on BWGs of the city since last week.

The chief municipal health officer Dr Avinash Khanna said that MCD would take action against all such BWGs in a phased manner. There are about 3,000 BWGs across the city and eateries constitute a big part of it.  All BWGs have been directed to segregate their garbage and dispose of it as per the rules besides submitting their action plan for it. He said that MCD would start sending notices to such restaurants and hotels from Wednesday and would impose a penalty accordingly for not complying with the rules, said Khanna.
