A massive fire broke out at a packaging material factory in Haridwar in the wee hours of Tuesday. The flames engulfed the whole factory and it took about 10 fire tenders units to control it. However, the fire was still active inside due to the presence of flammable material till late on Tuesday but was no longer spreading, the Haridwar superintendent of police (City) Swatantra Kumar said. He told The Pioneer that there was no one inside the building when the fire started but it soon turned massive due to items like polystyrene stacked inside. “Our main aim was to not let the fire spread to the nearby factories. It took several hours to get it under control but it still could not be extinguished completely. The fire was brought under control from outside but sending personnel inside the building seemed quite dangerous. The fire is still active inside and we are currently trying to ensure it does not spread to other factories located nearby. All necessary arrangements have been made to control the fire if it spreads again during the night. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained,” the SP added.
