Wednesday, 08 March 2023 | PNS | DEHRADUN

The Transport department is gearing up to start the operation of CNG-fuelled Vikrams in Rishikesh and Haridwar after taking the initiative of operating clean-fuelled Vikrams in Dehradun. The officials said that the department is making efforts to promote clean-fuelled public transport vehicles to minimise air pollution in cities as per the directions of the National Green Tribunal (NGT).

The department has already directed Vikram operators in Dehradun city to either convert their vehicles by installing CNG kits or buy clean-fuelled vehicles like BS VI vehicles, CNG fuelled or electric hybrid vehicles by March 31. The regional transport authority (RTA) has already declared the ban on the operation of Vikrams older than a decade in Dehradun after March 31, 2023 and on the remaining after December 31, 2023 on the directions of NGT.

The RTA secretary Sunil Sharma said that many have appreciated this initiative of the department and have asked to implement the same in other divisions of the regional transport office of Dehradun too. He said that the department has been considering talking to the transport associations of Haridwar and Rishikesh to start the installation of the CNG kit by Vikram operators. The department will possibly issue an order for CNG kit installation within two months, said Sharma.
