The Dehradun district magistrate Savin Bansal has suspended the arms licence of a man accused of repeatedly pointing a licensed firearm at his wife during domestic disputes. The district administration has seized the licensed weapon and initiated proceedings for permanent cancellation of the licence.
According to the officials, the DM took the action following a complaint submitted by the victim Shikha on August 1. In her plea to the DM, she alleged that her husband, Yash Yadav, routinely threatened her with his weapon and demanded dowry. The complainant also cited persistent mental harassment and fear for her safety. Taking cognisance of the complaint and in view of public safety and domestic security, the DM ordered the immediate suspension of arms licence number 311, issued under the jurisdiction of Nehru Colony police station, Dehradun.
The licence was registered for a non-prohibited bore revolver or pistol under UIN 336261002327282019. The officials informed that the police have been directed to seize the weapon and keep it in custody on behalf of the State government. According to them, the licensee had violated the conditions under which the licence was granted, citing provisions of Section 17(3)(a) and (b) of the Arms Act, 1959 and Rule 32(3) and (4) of the Arms Rules, 2016. The accused is originally from Banshigaura, Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh. In addition to the domestic abuse allegations, a separate complaint has been received regarding the use of forged documents to obtain the arms licence, as per the officials.
The district administration has issued a show-cause notice to Yadav, giving him 15 days to respond and present his side. If his explanation is found unsatisfactory, the licence may be permanently revoked in public interest, the officials said.
