Pauri police stopped a major smack supply operation during the festive season and arrested a drug trafficker with 172.8 grammes of smack worth around Rs 50 lakh. The drug was meant to sell to school and college students as well as factory workers for higher profits during the festive period, as per the officials. The accused, identified as Mohit (28), a resident of Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, was caught during a special police operation in Kotdwar on Thursday.

Following the directions of Pauri senior superintendent of police Lokeshwar Singh to curb illegal drug trafficking, Kotdwar police and the CIU team conducted intensive checking and surveillance across the area ahead of Deepawali. During the drive, police found Mohit in suspicious circumstances and recovered the contraband from his possession. He was taken into custody and presented before the court. The officials said that during interrogation, Mohit admitted that he brought the smack from Bareilly to Kotdwar intending to make small packets and sell them to school and college students as well as factory workers during the festive period.

He also revealed that he has been involved in this illegal trade for a long time. The officials said that a case has been registered against him under sections 8/21 of the NDPS Act at Kotdwar police station. Police records show that Mohit was previously booked under the same Act in 2023 at the same station, they added.
