The police arrested a man for reportedly instigating a Moradabad woman to commit suicide in Haldwani. The accused Mohammad Haroon, identified as a relative of the deceased Rabiya, who was a nurse, had allegedly been blackmailing her and pressurising her to marry him. Rabiya, who was already married, reportedly died by suicide after enduring prolonged harassment.
The Haldwani circle officer Nitin Lohani informed that the incident took place on April 27, when the nurse, originally from Moradabad, was found dead in the residential premises of a private hospital located on Rampur Road in Haldwani. The police initially treated the case as a suicide but the victim’s father filed a complaint alleging murder. He claimed his daughter could not have taken such a step on her own. He stated that she had been married for three years and lived in Haldwani with her sister-in-law, a doctor, along with her two children, as per Lohani.
The father also alleged that someone had been harassing her over the phone. Based on the complaint, the police registered a case against the unknown and started an investigation. A police team was formed to look into the matter that reviewed CCTV footage from the area and conducted a mobile forensic analysis.
The CO said that the investigation revealed that the accused Haroon, a distant relative of the nurse from Thakurdwara in Moradabad, had been in contact with her for the past 10–12 years. Despite her marriage three years ago, Haroon reportedly continued to blackmail her and demanded money on multiple occasions. He also reportedly pressured her to marry him. Evidence showed that he had argued with her repeatedly and even assaulted her, as per the CO. He informed that Haroon had reportedly taken money from the nurse online, contributing to her mental distress. Following the investigation, the police arrested Haroon and sent him to jail.
