Dehradun police have arrested a man accused of killing his wife by hitting her on the head with a liquor bottle and a grinding stone after a domestic dispute. According to police, the accused, identified as Prem Bahadur Thapa (60), a resident of Pokhara, Nepal was living in a rented room in Dakra Bazaar, Garhi Cantt, with his wife, Kopila Thapa. The couple had come to Dehradun from Nepal on September 5 for her treatment at the Military Hospital, where they were availing free healthcare under the CGHS facility. The officials informed that Thapa and his wife allegedly had an argument after consuming alcohol on the night of October 12.

During the altercation, his wife reportedly pushed him, which angered him. In a fit of rage, Thapa struck her with a liquor bottle, a glass and a grinding stone, causing severe head injuries. His wife became unconscious and Thapa, realising the gravity of the incident, cleaned the blood from the bathroom and told neighbours that she had slipped and fallen in the bathroom. With the help of neighbours, he took her to the Military Hospital, where doctors declared her dead. He later informed relatives and others that she had died after slipping in the bathroom and washed away blood stains from the walls.

The next day, Thapa disposed of the bloodstained bottle, broken glass and grinding stone in a garbage pile in a nearby forested area on MH Road, Dakra. Police recovered these items based on his confession and identification of the spot. The officials stated that the incident came to light after the couple’s son, Arjun Thapa, filed a complaint at Cantt Police Station, alleging suspicious circumstances surrounding his mother’s death. Police registered a case under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and launched an investigation.

A team arrested Thapa from the Cantt area on Thursday. During questioning, he admitted to attacking his wife during the argument, as per the officials. They said that police have taken the recovered items into custody and are completing further legal formalities in the case.
