The enforcement teams of the regional transport office (RTO) of Dehradun have commenced its five-day long campaign from Monday against the vehicles carrying students to ensure their safe commuting. The teams checked a total of 170 vehicles and imposed penalties on 48 vehicle operators on the first day of the campaign. The regional transport officer (enforcement), Sunil Sharma said that the RTO’s initiative is aimed to check issues like overloading in all kinds of vehicles that carry students and whether they follow all protocols. He said, “Our teams are focussing on all necessary parameters to ensure students’ safety. The officials are checking all necessary documents of students carrying vehicles.  Overloading by school buses and public transportations like Vikrams, auto rickshaws and others is also being watched by us. We have also warned administrations of about 300 schools listed with RTO to not operate school buses if they do not hold necessary documents like fitness permit and others.

We are also checking the students that use two-wheelers to commute to school. The teams have also seized vehicles flouting the rules that potentially put a student’s life in risk.” He informed that out of total 170 vehicles checked under the campaign on Monday, the teams penalised 48 vehicle operators- 21 from Rishikesh, 20 from Dehradun and seven from Vikasnagar, and seized nine vehicles- four from Vikasnagar, three from Dehradun and two from Rishikesh. Besides this, 18 students were also inspected who were using two-wheelers to commute. Sharma said that he has instructed to conduct this five-day long campaign in four districts- Dehradun, Haridwar, Tehri and Uttarkashi and stringent actions will be taken against any violations by the enforcement team. He also added that the transport department will continue to conduct such campaigns consistently to ensure safe commuting of students whether it is through private or public vehicles.
