The workers of the Uttarakhand Mahila Congress held a demonstration at Astley Hall here on Saturday to protest what they termed a highly derogatory comment on women made by Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. They also burned an effigy of Sarma as a mark of their protest.

The State president of Mahila Congress Jyoti Rautela said that it appears that the BJP leaders are vying among themselves to make derogatory and objectionable comments. She said that the BJP government has failed to rein in such leaders. Rautela said that the BJP leaders are consistently demeaning women. She warned that such behaviour will not be tolerated and said that Assam CM should tender an apology for his comment.

The Congress leader said that the BJP leaders are giving such statements to hide their failures and mislead the general public.

She said that on one hand the country is sinking under a burden of debt and on the other PM Modi is handing over the public money to his favourite industrialists. Rautela said that the cases of crime against women are consistently increasing and in most of the cases there is clear involvement of BJP leaders. She accused the BJP government for failing to provide justice to Ankita Bhandari.

The president of Mahanagar Congress committee Urlima Thapa, vice president Najma Khan, Asha Manorama Sharma, Chandrakala Negi and others attended the protest.
