Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Karan Mahara said that the rape of a minor in Nainital and involvement of a Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJVM) leader in the crime has again exposed the involvement of ruling party leaders in the cases of crime against women in the State.
In a statement, the PCC president said that the incident is shameful for the State. He said that Uttarakhand, known for its peaceful culture and civilised society is drawing shame due to the increasing incidents of rape and sexual violence against women in recent years. “These frequent incidents have raised questions about the State’s law and order condition and women’s safety. Despite the State government’s claim of action, the criminals remain emboldened. The government has repeatedly made hollow claims of women’s safety but the ground reality is that fear and insecurity among women in the State is continuously increasing. The police system has collapsed, fast-track courts exist only on paper, and victim families are wandering from pillar to post seeking justice. It is really disheartening that daughters are not safe in Uttarakhand,’’ he said.
Mahara added that the involvement of members of the ruling party in cases of crimes against women in the last three and half years of BJP’s rule in the State has shattered the identity of Uttarakhand. He demanded that that a high-level, impartial investigation into the incidents of rape and murder of innocent people should be ordered.
