Locals face prolonged traffic jams on first day of Assembly session

Massive traffic jams were witnessed on several stretches and routes in Dehradun due to barricading and traffic diversions set up by the police for the Assembly session which began on Tuesday. The most affected areas were Survey Chowk, Rispana bridge, Haridwar Road and various connecting roads among others where the commuters had to face major inconvenience.

The local commuters said that despite the claim of the police of making suitable arrangements to ensure smooth movement of vehicles during every Assembly session, the traffic situation gets worse in every session. The difficulties the public has to go through during the whole Assembly session are never considered by the authorities concerned. This was stated by locals while expressing their sentiments on facing traffic issues on various roads of the city on the first day of the Assembly session.

One of the commuters, Vivek Patel said that he was stuck in traffic for 15 minutes in Fountain Chowk and then for 20 minutes near Rispana bridge. “It is not that the traffic personnel deployed there were not doing their work but it actually made no difference. It was taking several minutes to even move your vehicle a bit forward. The week has just started and people go to work every morning. How is it possible that the government does not understand such basic things and schedule the Assembly sessions on the days with the least traffic or at least at odd hours for traffic,” said Patel.

A parent Rakesh Duggal said that he was stuck in traffic for about 30 minutes while returning after picking up his daughter from school. He said, “I picked up my daughter from her school in Dharampur around 12 PM after her exam and got stuck near Lakshmi Road for about 20 minutes and then later for 15 minutes each on Inder Road and near MDDA Dalanwala as many tried to use shorter routes to avoid traffic on main roads. This made the situation worse on internal routes as there were no traffic police to manage the congestion.”
