Advocates in the Uttarakhand high court have started an awareness campaign in support of their demand to allow the wearing of the traditional Pahadi Topi as part of the dress code in the high court. The advocates are planning to make their representation on this issue soon to the chief justice and the bar council. The coordinator of this campaign and former head of the Uttarakhand high court bar association, MC Pant said that the involvement of lawyers in this public awareness campaign is rising consistently.  The previous head of the high court bar association Avtar Singh Rawat, former MP Mahendra Pal Singh and others have already extended their support to this campaign. Pant said that the traditional Pahadi Topi was prominently worn during the coolie movement under the leadership of Pandit Badridatt Pandey during the freedom movement. This is also part of Uttarakhand’s identity and should hence be accorded widespread recognition. Pant further said that wearing of traditional attire is permitted in the high courts of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and south India. Considering this, permission should be granted for wearing the Pahadi Topi in the Uttarakhand high court, he stressed.
