The four-day 117th Krishi Kumbh (All India Farmers Fair and Agro Industry Exhibition) of the GB Pant University of Agriculture and Technology (GBPUAT) was inaugurated by the former Maharashtra Governor and former chief minister of Uttarakhand, Bhagat Singh Koshyari. Among the dignitaries present on the occasion included the former Union minister and MP Ajay Bhatt and the GBPUAT vice- chancellor, Manmohan Singh Chauhan. The theme of this edition of Kisan Mela is Sustainable Agricultural Development through Cooperative Farming.
While addressing the farmers, scientists and students, Koshyari said that this fair is a confluence of farmers and scientists where farmers are informed about new agrarian technologies, adding that special attention is being now given to the coarse grain production at the initiative of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make Uttarakhand a leading State in the coming days. He exhorted the scientists to work more on new technology research so as to enable the farmers to use them and raise their income consequently.
The VC in his address spoke of the university’s commitment to helping farmers enhance their income. “Krishi Vigyan Kendras have organised 355 training camps on various subjects last year for the farmers’ benefit,” he said, adding that the farmers are being updated on innovation, technology and new varieties at the Kisan Mela held twice a year.
