After the revenue collection remained affected due to Covid-19 for two years, the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) is optimistic about achieving its target of collecting Rs 50 crore in this financial year.

The municipal tax superintendent Dharmesh Painuly informed that the corporation has made several improvements in this financial year to make all kinds of payment options accessible to taxpayers. He said that the corporation has also started a self assessment process of documents online for property tax submission. The website launched for tax submission earlier was also made more user-friendly for taxpayers. “The tax section has witnessed a 20 per cent increase in the tax submission through online transactions than the last year. Overall, it is just about 10 per cent of the total tax collection but it is still a great improvement from previous years. We are not so disappointed with this percentage because we are aware that people take time to trust and use online transaction facilities. The MCD has already registered 1,500 new property taxpayers in the past three months. We are sure the number of people using online modes for tax submission will definitely increase in upcoming months,” said Painuly.

He said that the corporation has collected about Rs 22 crore as property tax so far from over 30,000 property taxpayers. It would soon issue notices to property tax defaulters of 55 wards including non-residential establishments on the basis of the data collected through the Geographic Information System (GIS) based survey, said  Painuly. He said that once the corporation finishes the survey for property mapping in the remaining wards in the estimated time of six months, there would be a considerable increase in the amount of property tax revenue.
