Lawyers seek CBI inquiry in scams in registrar office

Claiming that the police are targeting lawyers rather than going after those actually guilty of orchestrating scams in the registrar office, the Dehradun Bar Association has asked chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to conduct a CBI inquiry into the case.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed to investigate this case is consistently harassing lawyers in the name of questioning while the names of government officials like additional district magistrate, sub divisional magistrate, Tehsildar and Nayab Tehsildar who monitor the works in registrar office have not been even mentioned in the investigation.

This claim was made by the president of the Dehradun Bar Association Anil Sharma in a Press conference on Monday. The association has expressed disappointment with the police investigation since SIT arrested senior advocate Kamal Virmani a week ago for his alleged involvement in changing property documents in the registrar office.

Sharma said that the police are just targeting lawyers and protecting the guilty government officers. He said that the SIT is yet to present the main accused of the case KP Singh in the court despite its claims of having all evidence against him. There are many such questionable sides of this investigation, claimed Sharma. He said that there is an atmosphere of fear in court premises because of the way police are questioning lawyers without any proper evidence.

If this process continues, the lawyers will gherao the director general of police Ashok Kumar and senior superintendent of police Daleep Singh Kunwar. The bar association also declared a lawyers’ strike from Tuesday afternoon over the alleged harassment of lawyers in Dehradun in the scam in the registrar office case and the Hapur lathi charge incident in Uttar Pradesh. Sharma said that the lawyers will intensify their protest if the police do not arrest government officials who are actually responsible for the scams.
