Muni Ki Reti municipality collects 180 kgs of e-waste in two weeks

The Muni Ki Reti municipality has collected 180 kilogrammes of e-waste in the past 14 days in the initial phase of the municipality’s plan to tackle the rising quantity of electronic waste. Since many tend to dispose of all kinds of garbage together in garbage collection vehicles, the municipality is also raising awareness among locals regarding e-waste disposal.

The executive officer (EO) of the municipality Tanvir Singh Marwah issued an order to sanitation officials, about two weeks ago, to commence the operation of garbage collection vehicles in all wards for the e-waste collection from all 11 wards. He directed the sanitation officials to operate vehicles in every ward between 10 AM to 5 PM to collect the e-waste.

Marwah said that in the initial phase, vehicles are being sent in wards roster-wise but the visits of vehicles will be made more frequent after the locals are more aware about e-waste and its adverse effect it will have if disposed along with the household waste. “We are raising awareness among locals which is a significant part of our plan to manage e-waste. Besides other facts, sanitation teams are telling people how disposal of e-waste along with household waste or following any other wrong way of its disposal can potentially cause fatal diseases like cancer.  We have asked them to dispose of their e-waste in the municipality’s vehicles to minimise the risk of such diseases,” said the EO.

Talking about the disposal plan of collected e-waste, he said that Uttarakhand Environment Protection and Pollution Control Board (UEPPCB) has recommended some organisations to the municipality that carry out e-waste disposal under the supervision of an authorised dealer. “After we collect five tonnes of e-waste, which would possibly take a month or two, it will be sent for disposal to an authorised dealer. It would also earn some revenue for the municipality,” added the EO.
