In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) facility starts at AIIMS- Rishikesh

The technique to help couples facing infertility issues.

In what can be termed as good news for the couples facing infertility issues, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Rishikesh has started In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) facility.  Incidentally the AIIMS -Rishikesh is the first government health institute in Uttarakhand where this facility has been started. 

The Director AIIMS- Rishikesh, Dr Arvind Rajwanshi inaugurated the IVF Centre in the Gynaecology Department of the Institute on Monday.

The Dean Academics, Dr Manoj Gupta said that IVF is an expensive treatment but couples will be able to avail this facility at much lesser prices in AIIMS- R now. Professor

The Medical Superintendent (MS) of AIIMS- Rishikesh, Ashwani Kumar Dalal said that with this facility it is possible to manage both male and female factor infertility.

The In-charge of IVF Centre at AIIMS Rishikesh, Dr Jaya Chaturvedi said that her department has been managing couples with infertility from the last four years.  She said that the construction of the IVF facility at AIIMS Rishikesh is now complete and the department would provide this facility to women up to 45 years and for men up to 50 years of age as per the guidelines of Indian Council of Medical Research Guideline (ICMR).

It is pertinent to mention here that almost 15 per cent of couples face infertility and it carries with it a great degree of social stigma. 

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is an assisted reproduction technique where an egg is combined with sperm, in a lab to produce an embryo.  The process involves stimulating a female patient’s ovaries with hormonal medications, removal of eggs from ovaries (ovum pickup), and letting sperm fertilize them in a culture medium in a laboratory.
