Imagining Gandhi’s vision for the Indian economy

While the nation pays homage on the occasion of MK Gandhi’s birth anniversary, there are some who are also recalling his aspects apart from his role in the freedom movement. Managing director of Altos Enterprises, Abhishek Gupta states that as an entrepreneur, he is inspired by Gandhi’s conviction, foresight and vision for making the country self-reliant. By 2030, India will be the world’s third largest economy, on course to realise Gandhi’s dream of social and economic empowerment for every citizen of our country.

Gupta states, “Gandhi was an ardent advocate of entrepreneurship and desired self-sufficiency in our industries and agriculture. Charkha, or the spinning wheel, was his symbol of autonomy and a powerful tool for fighting the British dumping of consumer goods in our country. India supplied raw materials to British factories, which imported finished goods into our country.”

After 75 years of independence, India has envisioned self reliance as its policy clarion call and has set its sights on becoming a global exporter of services and manufactured products. If Gandhi were still alive, he would have appreciated the economic intent of making it “India for the world.”

“I am proud of the advances India has made in recent years in science, technology and commerce, which Gandhi would have expected our country to make at some point. India’s demographic dividends are its most valuable asset, and in keeping with his vision of a nation that values intellect, education should be prioritised. Agriculture and manufacturing were the pivots of prosperity imagined by Gandhi in his time, and I would like India’s farming sector to be on par with the world’s advanced economies and our manufacturing sector to be the bellwether for our economy. His thoughts were far ahead of their time. As India celebrates its 75th year of independence, the narrative of economic and social equity drives the country toward its goal of becoming a $5 trillion economy. His vision of a prosperous India will be realised only if every citizen of our country believes in his philosophy of selfless dedication to nation-building and sets aside their differences,” added Gupta.
